A scholarship valued at NZ $28,200 (plus domestic fees per year) is open to PhD applicants who are interested in the area of education policy formation, implementation, or evaluation.

The Faculty of Education and Social Work at the University of Auckland has a doctoral scholarship designated for an outstanding new, full-time applicant in the area of education policy formation, implementation, or evaluation. The successful applicant will engage in doctoral study of education policy, focused on New Zealand or an international context*, at the school, regional, or national level, supervised by Dr. Jo Smith. The proposed study could be qualitative or mixed methods. An ideal research focus might include:

  • Teacher certification, hiring, evaluation, and/or retention policies
  • English Learner policies
  • Education funding policies
  • Student discipline policies
  • Assessment policies
  • Decision-making roles (e.g., of school leaders, Boards of Trustees, the Ministry of Education)

To be competitive, the individual should have teaching and/or education research experience and be seeking an academic career or other professional leadership position.

Interested individuals must complete an Application for Admission (AFA) and meet all of the University’s entry requirements. Application for University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarships is made at the same time as the Application for Admission. The Statement of Research Intent, Doctoral Referee Reports, CV or resume, and transcripts must be scholarship worthy.
