Description

The University of Auckland Society AGM and Christmas Party is taking place on Tuesday 4 December and we would love to see you there to help us celebrate the year that’s past and the approaching festive season.

The AGM will run from 5.30pm – 6.00pm and will then be followed by Christmas festivities until 8pm.

AGM - Special Guest, Chancellor Scott St John

The Chancellor, Scott St John, has agreed to join us to speak about the process of selecting a new Vice-Chancellor to replace Professor Stuart McCutcheon, who retires later in 2019. The Chancellor is keen to have feedback from Society members about the skills and qualities that the Council should be looking for in a new Vice-Chancellor.

The Executive Committee have compiled questions to which we would value your feedback via the link prior to the 25th November so that the content can be collated and presented at the meeting as there will only be limited time for discussion. To view the questions to the Chancellor and provide feedback, please click here.

Speakers and entertainment

Three Minute Thesis presentation

Once again the Society supported the Three Minute Thesis competition this year. This engaging competition gives students just three minutes to explain their thesis and is run in universities worldwide. We are delighted to have this year’s People’s Choice Award Winner, Nurul Haiza “Zaza” Saipee from the Faculty of Engineering share her presentation with us: Bridging the Gap: Structural Integration in the Spine. There will be time for questions about Zaza’s research after her talk.

Presentations from Society sponsored students

The Society sponsored two students this year through the VC Support Fund who will attend to thank you for your support and demonstrate how this funding has helped them. The students are:

Noah Rudd: a musician in the Auckland Youth Orchestra touring Europe

Naomi Simon-Kumar: an attendee at the UN Commission on the Status of Women in New York

Carlene Newall de Jesus

Carlene is a lecturer in Dance Studies at the University of Auckland and has carried out research in the areas of dance and dementia and is currently establishing the theory and practice of safe dance practices within education, performance and health related contexts. Carlene's talk will have you moving without you realising!

University of Auckland Staff Choir

To round off the evening, the Staff Choir will perform a few festive pieces that you are very welcome to join in with!

Further information

Please note that this event is free to Society members. The cost of purchasing an additional ticket for a guest, who is most welcome, is $30.
