The course looks at Asia and its relationship with New Zealand and our evolving political, social, economic, cultural and strategic relations.

Topics include:

  • Historical and contemporary ties.
  • Asian migration.
  • Asia’s growing presence in New Zealand.
  • Literature, media and films.

The course focuses on South-East and East Asia.

 

Who should take this course?

You should take this course if you are interested in Asia and its relationship with New Zealand.

 

Learning outcomes

When you finish the course, you should be able to:

  • Understand the evolving political, social, economic, cultural, and strategic relations between New Zealand and Asia.
  • Understand New Zealand’s efforts to re-position itself in relation to Asia.
  • Understand the diversity of the Asian region.
  • Understand current debates on globalisation, and on national and regional identity.
  • Demonstrate basic academic skills such as data analysis, interpretation, and critical thinking.

 

Delivery format

Weekly 2-hour lecture, and a 1-hour tutorial from the second week.

 

Timetable

Lecture: Tuesday 10am–12noon.

 

Assessment
  • 50% final exam.
  • 50% coursework, including one essay of 20%.

 

Resources

A course reader will be issued in two parts, for those enrolled in the course.
