Commerce and Engineering Careers Fairs and Law Distribution Days are now over for 2012 and scores of satisfied students have already signed employment contracts for next year. Fairs were extremely well attended and feedback from both students and employers was overwhelmingly positive. Employer Presentations also generated lots of interest.
These events are great for students to meet potential employers, learn about their companies and what opportunities they offer.
Employers come to promote their brand on campus, target potential recruits for graduate programmes, and offer other vacancies or internships. Employer evaluations show that 80-90% found the events very useful! Employers are interested in students from a wide range of faculties, stages and years.
University Careers Services encourages all students to check the employers coming onto campus for careers fairs – while employers may attend the Commerce or Engineering Fairs, they can also recruit more widely than just Accountants and Engineers!
Students’ attendance at the Law Distribution Days increased 33% on last year’s event; the others were just too big to count!
98% of all students who completed feedback said they were ‘definitely satisfied’ with the Career Fairs and Law Distribution Days! Most indicated it was useful to talk to employers and the experience helped them to plan their career direction.
Feedback also showed that attendance by first year students had increased: 37% in 2011 to 49% in 2012. This could mean that students are considering their future earlier on so they can better plan their study - something definitely encouraged by Careers Services!
Some employer comments are below:
“It was good to have a stall where students can have face to face contact with representatives of our firm in an informal setting.”
“We thought it was well worthwhile attending this event. What exceeded our expectations was the number of interested students who visited our display and took the time to ask us questions and have a bit of a discussion.”
“We’ve just finished 6 recruitment Fairs in Australia and this Auckland Fair is the most targeted and effective for connecting with students relevant to our particular needs – thank you!”
“Technical skills are important but we’re equally big on communication and social skills – these help us select one graduate over another.”
“If students join toastmasters, they can build their social and communication skills even when it’s not a natural trait. It’s great to see toastmasters on a CV”
“Report writing skills in Engineering graduates tend to be weak, so if a student has this ability – we are very interested to see it noted on their CV”
