Salaries and pay: researching New Zealand salary information
Find out about New Zealand market salaries.
When you go for a job interview, your preparation may include researching market salaries for the type role you are applying for.
Generally, you shouldn't ask about salary in your first interview. However, you should have an idea of the salary range so you can answer questions about your expectations.
Here are several sources that may help you.
The government's Careers New Zealand website has information about salaries in their jobs database.
TradeMe's Salary Guide gives national pay rates by category. The figures appear to be based on data from jobs posted on TradeMe.
The CareerSearch bibliography's Subjects page includes the link, “Salary information resources.” This link generates a list of articles and resources that may help you research salaries.
Jobs and Tertiary Education Indicator Tool (JETI)
JETI is one of a suite of labour market tools put together by the Department of Labour from the Census.
You can use JETI to:
- Search a field of study (eg, accountancy).
- Find out the top 10 occupations for this field.
- Find out the median and average income for each of those occupations at the time of the last census.
Visit the JETI page on the Department of Labour website
Department of Labour's pay information
You can find out about pay in general and the minimum wage in this section of the Department of Labour’s website. You won’t find salary ranges for specific occupations.
Sometimes professional associations have information about salaries on their websites.
An example is the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants (NZICA), who have prepared a page especially for students.
Another source of salary information is the Hays website. You will need to contact Hays for the most up-to-date version of their salary survey.
You can email your details for access to the Auckland Chamber Salary Survey.
Employers and Manufacturers Association have salary information for sale, but only to members of a regional employers association.
