COMPSCI 111G Mastering Cyberspace: An Introduction to Practical Computing

Description

A practical introduction to computing that will build your confidence and familiarity with computers.

Topics include:

  • website design
  • an overview of computer hardware and operating systems
  • effective use of common applications
  • using the internet as a communication medium
  • applying programming concepts
  • social implications of technology.

As part of your practical work, you will create web pages, and use a variety of home and office applications including word processing, spreadsheets, PowerPoint and databases.

Purpose (who should take this course and why)

This fun, popular course is designed for students who want a general introduction to computing. Experience with a wide range of practical applications will provide transferable skills that will be equally useful in academic and industry environments. No prior experience with computers is required, and help is always readily available from the teaching staff.

Delivery format

Three one-hour lectures per week, plus a three-hour weekly lab.

Labs are designed to give practical experience with topics taught in lectures. Friendly tutors are always available in the labs to provide assistance when needed.

Assessment

The course assessment comprises lab assignments, a terms test and a final examination.

The total mark consists of:

  • a 20% practical component (10 lab assignments worth 2% each)
  • a theory component (test worth 20% and a final exam worth 60%).

To pass the course, you must pass both the practical (labs) and theoretical (test and exam) components.
