Computer assistance and training

You can get computer assistance and training from a number of places, including Information Commons Helpdesks, the Centre for Academic Development — Student Learning, and the Library.

Wireless - UoA WiFi

The University of Auckland operates a ‘UoA-WiFi’ wireless network for student use.

Students can use their own mobile devices or laptop to access the Internet, course materials and other services while on campus. Students can also borrow laptops from the IC Helpdesks for a two-hour period.

The Centre for Academic Development (CAD)

Student Learning (Tā te Ākonga)

Student Learning provides:

Workshops and online resources for thesis formatting and compiling using Microsoft Word, presentations and poster making using Microsoft PowerPoint and quantitative data analysis using Microsoft Excel and SPSS.

Help with academic referencing

Acknowledgement of sources is an important aspect of academic writing. The University’s Referen©ite website  provides students with a one-stop online resource for academic referencing needs.

Referen©ite explains the essentials of referencing and how to avoid plagiarism. It also includes practical tools to help students reference correctly, use references effectively in writing, and gives fast access to some major reference formats with examples.

IT Training for Postgraduate Students

The IT Training Programme at the Centre for Academic Development (CAD) offers IT Training workshops for all postgraduate students.

Workshops range from 2 hours to 6 hours in duration and cover a wide range of software including:

  • SPSS
  • Office and Windows upgrade
  • TexNiC Centre and LaTeX

Turnitin

Some academic courses will require you to use Turnitin, a web based originality checking service. Your lecturer will tell you if you are required to use it.

For information or help with Turnitin, contact your lecturer.

Library workshops

Hands-on introductory workshops will explain and give you experience in using the Library Search, electronic resources and The University of Auckland IT systems.

Most courses last one hour. They are also a good opportunity to ask questions about the Library and scholarly research methods. Attending a few Library workshops early on in your studies will provide you with sound information retrieval skills to support your studies.

To book free Library workshops:

  • Go to the Library workshop website
  • Select the workshop you want to attend.
  • Select the date and time from the drop–down menu and click ‘Book this session’.
  • Login via NetID to book your place.

Digital TV

The University of Auckland has its own satellite TV service called UniSat. UniSat receives local and international television channels and makes recordings of television programmes for educational use by the University of Auckland. A commercial service; eTV is also being piloted.

Live streams are available to staff and students via the University network. The Library is also capturing programmes on request for longer term access. Over 4,000 programmes are available in The Television Vault, searchable through the Library Catalogue.
