About Counselling Services
Find out how the Counselling Services team can help you, how to contact emergency services, and your rights as a client.
We offer support for a wide range of personal issues or emotional difficulties that impact on your academic studies.
Issues include:
- anxiety and stress
- depression
- relationship issues
- grief and loss
- eating difficulties
- past trauma or abuse
- drugs and alcohol
- sexuality and sexual orientation
- family issues
- cultural and identity issues.
Academic support
We can provide academic support when circumstances beyond your control impact on academic performance.
Issues include:
- assignment extensions
- test consideration
- compassionate consideration for exams
- late deletion of papers.
You can make an appointment by calling us during office hours, or by visiting the reception counter at the Health Centre, City Campus.
Initial appointments are generally 30 minutes long with a limited number of 1-hour follow-up appointments available.

Cancellations
If you wish to cancel an appointment, you must give 24 hours' notice whenever possible. We often have a waiting list of students who need to be seen.
If you need emergency counselling, or if you fear for the safety of someone else, we have emergency counselling available. See Emergencies.
- You have the right to be treated with respect and dignity.
- You have the right to stop attending counselling at any time, for any reason, or request to see another counsellor.
- You have the right to expect confidentiality. This means the counsellor will keep what you tell him or her confidential to the counselling service. However, on rare occasions, confidentiality may be broken if there are serious concerns about your safety or the safety of others. Your counsellor would always discuss this with you fully.
- You have the right to the counsellors about how they work or what their experience is. You can do this in the first session or at any other time during counselling.
- You have the right to expect accountability. All our counsellors are members of their professional associations, which have their own set of rules and ethical standards. Please ask at reception if you would like to see a copy of these.
- You have the right to have a support person with you at any time.
