Event information

Diwali (or Deepavali), popularly known as the "festival of lights," is a festival that commemorates the return of Lord Rama from his 14-year-long exile and vanquishing the demon-king Ravana.

In joyous celebration of the return of their king, the people of Ayodhya, the Capital of Rama, illuminated the kingdom with earthen diyas (oil lamps) and by bursting firecrackers.

The University of Auckland staged a celebration on Friday 12 October to welcome the beginning of Diwali.

All students from all cultural backgrounds were invited to experience the culture.  There was:

  • Free Indian food
  • Beautiful lights
  • Performances
  • Henna tattoos
  • Student clubs

PLUS there was a special showing of the critically acclaimed film ‘Monsoon Wedding’.

Date: Friday 12 October 2012
Start time: 6pm (movie screening at 7pm)
Venue: Level 1 Foyer, OGGB, Business School
Cost of entry: Free!
