NOTE: FRENCH 104 does not count for General Education, only FRENCH 104G counts for General Education. This course does not satisfy the General Education requirement for students with a current or prior enrolment in a language course, or who intend to enrol in another language course.

Description

This is a four-skill language course (reading, writing, speaking, listening). It teaches vocabulary and structure using up-to-date methodology and multi-media materials for beginners or near-beginners.

Purpose (who should take this course and why)

This course is an absolute beginner-level course, designed for students who have no previous knowledge of French.

It is not open to:

  • Students who have achieved in all standards entered for Level 2 NCEA French or gained grade average 50 or above.
  • Students eligible for or who have completed French 102 or French 162.

All students enrolling in the course must complete and submit a signed Language Competency Form. Please note that failure to do so or submission of inaccurate or incomplete information may result in removal from the course at any point.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, in order to obtain a pass grade, you must demonstrate a competent working knowledge of language topics covered, and the content up to the end of Chapter 4 of Deux Mondes.

Course assessment tests your ability to apply this knowledge to the four skills areas of reading, listening, speaking and writing.

Topics covered
  • Imperative mood with the pronoun vous.
  • Basic knowledge of grammatical gender.
  • Definite and indefinite articles and agreement in gender and number.
  • Subject pronouns.
  • The verb to be.
  • Forming the plural of nouns and articles.
  • Forming and distinguishing between definite, indefinite and partitive articles.
  • Present of first-, second- and third-group verbs.
  • Present-tense conjugation of common irregular verbs including faire, être, avoir, savoir, pouvoir, vouloir.
  • The verb aller with contractions of à.
  • Placement of adjectives, including irregular adjectives.
  • Direct object pronouns.
  • Recognition of passé composé.

  • Weeks 1-2: Premières rencontres
  • Weeks 2-3: Le monde étudiant
  • Weeks 4-5: Ma famille et moi
  • Weeks 6-7: La vie quotidienne et les loisirs
  • Weeks 8-9: En ville
  • Weeks 10-12: La maison et le quartier
Delivery format

The course consists of four hours of taught classes per week.

In addition to class hours, you are expected to spend 2-3 hours a week doing the assignments, which serve to reinforce what you learn in class and are an integral part of the course. You may work on these from any computer with broadband access.

Assessment

Assessment consists of:

Course work — 50%

  • “Cahier” Assignments — 25%
  • “Activity Pak” Assignments — 5%
  • Audio test 1 — 10%
  • Audio test 2 — 10%

Oral — 10%

Written examination — 40%

Resources

You are required to have a copy of the 6th edition of the Deux Mondes Textbook and the Book Key. These are sold as a package or separately from the University Bookshop. French 101 covers up to and including chapter 4 of Deux Mondes.

Note: if you purchase a second-hand edition of the textbook, you must still purchase access to the online activities (Book Key). Your book key is valid for 24 months, and can be renewed indefinitely.
