Tips for success


Here are some tips that will help you to study successfully.

  1. Manage your time carefully.
  2. Prioritise your coursework.
  3. Don’t over-commit yourself to part-time work.
  4. Complete your DELNA screening as early as possible.
  5. Keep in regular contact with an academic adviser from your faculty student centre.
  6. Choose your courses carefully.
  7. Organise an effective study space at home and find several study spaces on campus.
  8. Attend all your classes.
  9. Get to class on time.
  10. Be prepared for class.
  11. Introduce yourself to others in your classes and arrange study groups.
  12. Be ready to participate and ask questions.
  13. Take good notes in class.
  14. Listen actively and write down anything you don’t understand.
  15. Re-read your notes within 24 hours of the lecture.
  16. Master the material as you go.
  17. Create a plan in case of illness.
  18. Ask for help as soon as you need it.
  19. Make the most of your teacher’s time.
  20. Be pro-active in accessing the academic support facilities available to you.
  21. Learn how to find resources in the Library.
  22. Learn how to read quickly and actively.
  23. Understand what the University defines as cheating and how to avoid it.
  24. Make sure you understand what kind of help is acceptable when completing your assignments or helping others.
  25. Find out what style of referencing is used for each of your courses.
  26. Learn how to reference properly and allow adequate time to complete your references for an assignment.
  27. Complete your assignments on time.
  28. Check your EC Mail regularly.
  29. Get involved in some non-academic activities on campus.
  30. Keep fit and healthy.
  31. Stay open-minded and accepting of other peoples’ opinions.
  32. Help other students and stay safe on campus.
