How University Careers Services can help you

University Careers Services are open to all current students and graduates up to three years after graduation.

Careers advice (drop-in and appointments)

There are two main ways you can get one-to-one help and advice from our Careers Consultants: 

  • Drop-in service (no appointment necessary).
  • Make an appointment.
Drop-in services (no appointment necessary)

You can talk to a qualified Careers Consultant who will be able to answer quick questions on a variety of career topics and advise you briefly on your career research strategies, CV, cover letter, job searching, networking and interview techniques (up to 10 minutes).

Drop-in services are available in several locations

i -SPACE
Level 4, Kate Edger Information Commons building
City Campus
Hours: Mondays 2.30-3.30pm.
During semester break email e.vanvliet@auckland.ac.nz
This drop-in service is for international students.

Arts Faculty
Arts Student Centre
Hours: Tuesdays 1-2pm

Business School
ASB Business School Careers Centre, next to the Business Student Centre.
CV checks: drop-in 10am-3pm Mondays to Fridays.
During semester breaks: appointments only (book through Auckland CareerHub).

Education Faculty
Academic Success Centre
Epsom Campus.
Hours: Thursdays 11am-1pm

Engineering Faculty
Room 126, The ClockTower
Hours: Tuesdays 12-2pm

Law Faculty
Hours: Mondays 12.30-1.30pm
Extended hours in March 2012: 11am-1.30pm
During semester break:  By appointment only (you can make appointments on Auckland CareerHub).

Medical and Health Sciences
You can attend any of the faculty drop-ins on the City Campus or book an express appointment at Tāmaki Campus

National Institute of Creative Arts and Industries
NICAI Student Centre
Hours: Tuesdays/Thursdays 11am-1pm


Science Faculty

Science Student Centre
Hours: Mondays 11am-1pm
Tuesdays 1-2pm

Make an appointment with a Careers Consultant

Most appointments are for around half and hour or 1 hour, however from time to time during high demand periods express appointments are offered. These last 15 minutes.

You can make the following types of appointments with a Careers Consultant:

Career options discussion
No career ideas? Some or vague career ideas? Want to discuss your job hunting strategy? A chat with one of our consultants can help. (Appointments last up to 50 minutes.)

CV and cover letter advice
In depth advice on your CV and covering letter. (Appointments last up to 30 minutes.)

Practice interview
A chance to practice answering the sorts of interview questions asked by graduate employers. (Appointments last up to 30 minutes.)

Career Voyage
Career Voyage is a computer program that helps you identify types of work which matches your interests and preferences. The initial appointment to complete the assessment takes about 1 hour, and you will need a follow up 1-hour appointment.

PinPoint
PinPoint is a computer program that helps you identify types of work which matches your personality, interests and preferred work contexts. Come to the Careers Centre during opening hours to do the assessment (it takes about 1 hour), then make a follow up appointment with one of our Careers Consultants.

Card sorts
Our Careers Consultants use card sort exercises to help you identify and articulate:

  • what skills you have
  • what jobs or industries you would prefer to work in
  • what is important to you at work.

You will need to make a 1-hour appointment to do these exercises.

You can make an appointment on Auckland CareerHub (first time users will need to register).

If appointments are fully booked and you can't find a suitable time, please email careers@auckland.ac.nz.

We expect you will:

  • be punctual for interviews
  • ask for help if you cannot find what you are looking for
  • ask for help if you have special needs
  • where possible, inform us if you are unable to attend an appointment
  • prepare for an appointment by checking the information on our website
  • use the University Careers Services computer facilities appropriately (ie, for careers related purposes only)
  • where possible, participate in ongoing research and evaluation of our services by filling in feedback forms.
