Note: JAPANESE 130 does not count for General Education; only JAPANESE 130G counts for General Education.

Description

This integrated course is for beginners who have never studied Japanese and aims to develop basic proficiency in modern Japanese necessary to communicate in particular situations. The course will use a range of exercises and activities to develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, including various types of self-paced exercises available on CECIL. The course will introduce some socio-cultural aspects directly related to language-use situations.

Who should take this course?

Japanese 130G is a course for students who have never studied Japanese.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • Introduce yourself.
  • Ask for basic information such as the time of the day and location of buildings.
  • Buy things in shops and order meals in a restaurant.
  • Talk about your daily activities and past events.
  • Ask about interests.
  • Invite people to do something with you.
  • Make requests.
  • Ask permission.
  • Offer willingness to help.
  • Express reasons.
  • Read and write a simple passage (eg, memo, letter, and diary) using kana and 58 kanji.
Topics covered/course outline

Lessons one to six in the prescribed course textbook. 

Delivery format

Plenary lectures plus tutorials.

Lectures cover grammar points to be practised in the tutorials. Short video clips and other visual materials may be shown to cover topics on Japanese culture, primarily pertaining to language use.

In tutorials students will participate in interactive activities in all four skills.

Prescribed course textbook: Genki I: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese (second edition). The Japan Times (Textbook and Workbook). The prescribed course textbook can be obtained from the University Bookshop.
