An introduction to Māori anayses of topics that are often discussed and sometimes controversial, and that continue to shape contemporary life in New Zealand. Topics include aspects of world view, philosophy and social organisation; the Declaration of Independence, the Treaty of Waitangi and European immigration; and contemporary issues including Tready claims, ownership of the foreshore and seabed and constitutional issues.
Anyone who is curious about Maori life in New Zealand, past and present, and the future of this nation will enjoy this course. It is taught by Distinguished Professor Dame Anne Salmond, an award-winning author and speaker. The course will be invaluable to professionals in a wide variety of fields who will find themselves engaging with Maori issues or people.
At the completion of the course you are expected to:
- Have an understanding of many key Maori concepts.
- Be familiar with key events in the transformation of Maori life over time.
- Understand how this knowledge relates to contemporary race relations in New Zealand.
