The Scholarships were established in 2000 and are financed by Kiwiplan NZ Limited, an IT (Information Technology) company, specialising in computer systems for the paper packaging industry.

The main purpose of the Scholarships is to provide support for computer science students in their final year of study.


Selection process:


  • Up to three Scholarships will be awarded to Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Computer Science; Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) in Information Systems; Bachelor of Engineering in Software Engineering; or appropriate Bachelor of Technology candidates, who have enrolled and have paid the fees, or arranged to pay the fees, for full-time study in the Department of Computer Science.
  • The basis of selection will be for students in their penultimate year of study with:
  • (i) a GPA of 6.00 or above
  • (ii) study and experience of direct relevance in computer science
  • (iii) excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • (iv) excellent verbal and written English language skills
  • (v) ability to work as part of a team as well as independently
  • (vi) excellent project management and problem solving skills
  • (vii) demonstrated skills as a self-starter
  • (viii) interest in the development of software for manufacturing industries.

How do students apply?
Applications should be submitted by way of a letter to the Scholarships Office. This letter should describe how the candidate meets the criteria outlined in Regulation 4 above, their longer term career aspirations and indicate their availability for vacation employment with Kiwiplan NZ Ltd.

Decision makers
The Scholarships will be awarded by the University of Auckland Council upon the recommendation of a selection committee comprising the Dean of the Faculty (or nominee), the Head of the Department of Computer Science (or nominee), and a representative from Kiwiplan NZ Ltd.


How and when do students learn of the decision?
Approximately six weeks after closing date by letter.


What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
Nothing in these regulations prevents Kiwiplan NZ Ltd from withdrawing these Scholarships in future years, but it will ensure that a person to whom a Scholarship has been awarded shall not be disadvantaged by such a withdrawal.


Additional Information
  • Note:
  • (i) The recipients will receive summer vacation employment with Kiwiplan (located in Auckland). The Scholarship will therefore be awarded on the condition that applicants are committed to being available for full-time summer vacation employment commencing around mid to late November, through to late February. Kiwiplan will accommodate holiday plans (unpaid) of up to 2 weeks during this period where requested.
