LAWGENRL 442 Animals and the Law

This course is not a thinly veiled course focused on promoting animal interests – however, it is a course that promotes the ability to objectively, authoritatively, and practically assess legal Issues involving animals, where animals are one (but not the only) stakeholder with interests that must be appropriately balanced and prioritised by the law.

In order to understand the foundational principles that underpin past, present, and potentially future animal law, topics address historical and current drivers of animal welfare and law. With an informed understanding of the essential definitions, concepts and principles, the course then enables participants to apply these learnings to contemporary issues where law has the responsibility of governing diverse, conflicting, and frequently volatile subjective opinions.

The course draws on the diverse professional background of the lecturer, Ian Robertson. Ian is both a veterinarian and a lawyer.

  • Timetable: Mon 12-2 and Fri 12 - 3. Classes begin 7 January and end 8 February.
