To matou Tahuhu Korero | Our history

James Clendon Tau Henare gave his name to this Centre because of his passionate belief in education as a liberating force.


Nga Rangahau | Our research

Find out about the Centre's extensive social, cultural and economic research, and the role this plays in the well-being and advancement of Tai Tokerau people. Our projects include:
 

  • Te Wehi Nui a Mamao
    A website aimed at Tai Tokerau high school students and hapu members, but also for those working in planning, resource management, history and education (FoRST funding).
  • Te Ara: Māori Pathways of Leadership
    This photographic exhibition showcasing Māori leadership was developed out of Te Wehi Nui. The images by renowned photographer Krzysztof Pfeiffer were used in an international exhibition and in an accompanying book.
  • Maori Maps
    GPS locations and imagery of some 160 tribal marae in Northern Aotearoa for inclusion in the website (FoRST funding).
  • Diabetes in Tai Tokerau
    A proposed joint project with the Northland Health Board, Manaia Health and other local health providers based on a 12-year programme focusing on lifestyle transformation, starting with teenagers.
  • Papakupu | Tai Tokerau Dictionary
    Working files for the dictionary (currently offline).
