The Mauri Atua: knowledges theme of Te Whare Kura invites you to an interactive seminar presentation with international visitor Dr Sania Fa’amaile Betty Ickes via interactive video.
Dr. Ickes is from the islands of Tokelau and Sāmoa and presently resides in Oahu, Hawai’i. She earned her doctorate in History of the Pacific Islands at the University of Hawai’i at Manoā. For 8 years, Dr. Ickes has served as the Executive Director for Te Taki Tokelau Community, Inc., a grassroots-driven, non-profit organization that provides free Tokelau language education in Central Oahu and manages programs and projects that document, revitalize, and enhance the Tokelau language in the Hawai’i diaspora.
Seminar
The seminar presentation will discuss the Lumanaki Tokelau Language School (an afterschool programme) in Hawai’i; research regarding indigenous communities and revitalising and enhancing native language of Tokelau knowledge in Hawai’i focusing on Gagana and Aganuku Tokelau (language and culture).
The seminar will be followed by an interactive discussion.
