José Luis Abellán is Emeritus Professor of History of Philosophy at the Universidad Complutense of Madrid. He has been a member of the Executive Council of the UNESCO in representation of Spain, and President of the Spanish Confederation of UNESCO Clubs, the Asociación Hispanismo Filosófico, and the Ateneo de Madrid. He was awarded the UNESCO Silver Medal, the Encomienda de Alfonso X el Sabio, and the Orden de Don Quijote in the United States. For his intellectual work he has received the Premio de Ensayo El Europeo and the Premio Nacional de Ensayo.
Professor Abellán is the author of more than 50 books, including: Historia crítica del pensamiento español (7 vols, 1979-1991); Miguel de Unamuno a La luz de la Psicología (1964); Filosofía española en América, 1936-1966 (1967); La idea de América. Origen y evolución (1972); José Gaos ¿Cómo se adapta un filósofo a la cultura mexicana? (1993); Ideas para el Siglo XXI (1994); El exilio filosófico en América.
