Policy leadership: having a plan  Download event as icalendar

3 May 2012

3pm

Venue: Decima Glenn Room, Level 3, Owen G Glenn Building (The University of Auckland)

Host: Rt Hon. Mike Rann (CNZM)

Under the leadership of Premier Mike Rann, the Labor Government in South Australia worked closely with business, including changing traditional governance structures, to rapidly ‘turn around’, diversify and revitalise a state that was considered a 'basket case' economically. In this presentation, former Premier Rann will detail how the South Australian Strategic Plan, which has won international awards, in combination with the Thinkers in Residence Program, came into being, and why both have been considered a success. What becomes evident is that being pro-business, pro-environment and pro-social justice are not mutually exclusive and that thinking outside the square is an important component of leadership in policy making.

The Rt Hon. Mike Rann was Premier of South Australia from 2002-2011 and is a Distinguished Alumni of The University of Auckland. He is currently a Visiting Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Political Studies at The University of Auckland.
