What we do
The Auckland Bioengineering Institute (ABI) is one of two Large Scale Research Institutes at The University of Auckland and we are located at 70 Symonds Street. We offer postgraduate projects at masters and dcotoral levels.
Newcomers to the ABI discover we are unusually diversified for an institute of our size. We are a cross-disciplinary institute pioneering the development of mathematical models of human physiology and new instrumentation for a wide variety of largely health-related applications. Our research staff and 70 graduate students work side-by-side across many research disciplines and collaborate with international partners in the US, Europe and Australia and increasingly with our Asian neighbours.
Bioengineering is now one of the fastest growing areas of engineering and we actively engage with local industry, health care providers and clinicians to facilitate better transfer of our research to enable them to meet their commercial goals and to improve health outcomes.
While better known internationally for work in computational physiology, we are also active in imaging, instrumentation development and are involved in many different areas of basic biomedical and clinical research.
So if you have:
- a keen interest in the quantitative study of the physiology and pathophysiology of the heart, lung, digestive system, or endothelium, and
- have a strong undergraduate degree in applied mathematics and/or engineering or other computational, biological or physical sciences
we’d love to hear from you. Learn more about the ABI, our people, our research, and our postgraduate opportunities.
