New Zealand has a long and deep relationship with many countries in Southeast Asia - it educated some of the region's elite and helped defend its shores. Changing dynamics in the region mean New Zealand can no longer rely on its historical accomplishments in Southeast Asia. Southeast Asia needs to be crucial to New Zealand's engagement with the Asia region as a whole.
