2012 World Habitat Day  Download event as icalendar

1 October 2012 to 5 October 2012

World Habitat Day aims to increase collective awareness of human habitat and to encourage greater responsibility for a sustainable future. As the world’s population living in the urban areas steadily increases, issues of climate change, poverty, resource depletion, social exclusion, food insecurity and economic instability become pressing, and have the potential to significantly impact our urban settlements into the future.

The University of Auckland is hosting a series of events to raise awareness for a better urban future on World Habitat Day, and to showcase our initiatives in urban sustainability in line with the theme Changing Cities, Building Opportunities. Events encompass departments, disciplines, students and staff across The University of Auckland, as well as other interested stakeholders.

The United Nations have chosen Changing Cities, Building Opportunities as the theme this year to underscore the importance of cities as engines of growth. The need to plan our cities better is vital in avoiding chaotic development and urban sprawl. Well planned local and global urban environments continue to offer opportunities to both current and future residents, especially the many who leave the rural areas and flock to the cities for no other reason than the promise of a better future and prosperity.
