University centres and institutes
Formal category: University Centre
Hosted by: Faculty of Science
Established: 2009
Purpose: As well as facilitating the research of others, eResearch is a broad and fast-growing field in its own right, covering aspects of high-performance computing (e.g. grid and cluster computing, massive storage, emerging architectures and platforms), software engineering (e.g. grid middleware, web and grid services, workflow environments), computer-supported collaborative work (e.g. virtual science technologies, colaboratories, research social networks and virtual communities), computational semantics (e.g. ontologies and description languages, data interoperation and integration), support for domain-specific tools and services, and specific information science methodologies and engagement models. Indeed, there is often a need for deep engagement in particular research fields, in order to understand and meet their much specialised needs.
