Smoke Free University 2010

From 2010 The University of Auckland will be smoke free with smoking banned on all campuses and outdoor spaces including previously designated smoking areas.

The Smoke Free Policy is available in the policy register:

Smoke Free Policy (31KB PDF)

Around 5,000 people a year die from smoking related illnesses of which 400 of these die through passive smoking. The University decided its old policy was proving ineffective in combating the very real risks to non smokers of passive smoking.

The new policy will eliminate the effects of passive smoking. We will have a healthier and cleaner environment for our staff and students to thrive, and take pride in.

What help is there for you if you would like to quit smoking?

The University recognises that smoking is an addiction and is not, through the implementation of the Smoke Free Policy, saying that you have to stop smoking. But, if you would like to, you may find the following information useful.

Health Professionals
If you are enrolled with a healthcare provider you can talk to their staff about your options. If you do not have a healthcare provider, talk to the staff at University Health Services.

Quitline - call free 0800 778 778 or visit www.quit.org.nz
The Quit Group is New Zealand’s largest provider of smoking cessation and in 2008 alone provided support to over 52,000 smokers. You will receive support, help with planning, access to quit cards and subsidised nicotine patches, gum and lozenges just as you would from seeing a doctor or quit card provider in person.

Counselling
If you are a member of staff (excluding casual employees) contact Employee Assistance Programme on 09 358 2110 or the 24-hour emergency service line 0800 327 669.

When will we be smoke free?

From 1 January 2010 all University campuses and properties will be smoke free.
