Career resources in your faculty
On these pages you will find information and ideas about jobs related to your area of study. Some jobs demand a specific degree subject (especially in the fields of science and engineering). However, many vacancies advertised ask for graduates from any degree subject.
In addition to the specialist knowledge a degree provides, the process of studying for a degree and the wider university experience (living away from home, managing finances, part-time work, extra curricular activities eg, taking part in clubs and societies) gives graduates skills that are useful for any career (eg, analytical skills, problem solving skills, team working skills).
The ability to recognise, offer and use these "transferable" skills means that many graduates end up in careers not related to their degrees.
See Identify your skills.
The New Zealand Vice-Chancellors' Committee has been conducting a national survey of graduates, "Graduate Destination Survey 2007", to find out what they are doing six months after graduation.
The results are published as a series of survey reports (see especially NZUniGradStats, NZUniGradReport, NZUniPostGradReport), and as a subject listing. The name of your major may not correspond exactly to the subject name used in the survey, so check a few alternatives.
See the Graduate Destinations Survey.
