New Start for Business programme

New Start for Business is designed to prepare you for entry to the Bachelor of Business Information Management (BBIM), Commerce (BCom) or Property (BProp) at The University of Auckland Business School.

As a New Start Business student you will be introduced to a variety of topics in mathematics, economics and accounting. This will build your basic knowledge and help you to assess your areas of interest and decide what business degree to undertake.

As part of New Start for Business you will experience the excitement of learning and gain an insight into university study. If you successfully complete the programme in one semester you will be able to enrol at The University of Auckland in the following semester.

Entry requirements

You must be 20 years and over. We welcome all students with the potential and drive to succeed, so even if you did not do very well at school please do not let that prevent you from applying.

What can I expect?

 

New Start for Business offers you:

  • A one semester, part-time programme.
  • Evening courses held on the City Campus.
  • A Saturday Orientation workshop.
  • A (optional) short intensive introductory mathematics course.
  • Workshops to help you study.

Your New Start for Business courses

New Start for business offers three part-time courses. You will enrol in Enjoying Mathematics (optional), Mathematics Preparation for University (compulsory) and Introduction to Business (compulsory) to complete the programme.

You start the programme with a Saturday Orientation workshop to give you an overview of the timetable and course expectations, tips on managing your studies and the chance to explore the University campus. You then attend a series of weekly lectures.

New Start Business Orientation Day: Saturday 3 March, 10am-3.15pm in Room OGGB5, Level 0, Owen G Glenn Building 260, 12 Grafton Road, The University of Auckland, City Campus.
 

During the semester you will complete assignments and sit end of course tests.

What happens after New Start for Business?

You will receive your final result four weeks after completing your final test. Depending on your final result from the programme you may be able to apply for entry into the Business School before the next semester.

Enjoying Mathematics

The course is taught in a workshop environment, with some presentations by the lecturer, but most of the time students will be working together collaboratively, either as a whole class or in groups. If you have not completed Year 12 Mathematics at school, we strongly recommend that you enrol in this course to help you prepare for the compulsory mathematics course.

Mathematics Preparation for University

This course is compulsory in order to complete New Start for Business.

A variety of topics of everyday interest will be used to demonstrate and explore mathematical ideas with the aim of understanding the underlying mathematics and statistics. The mathematical ideas developed will include linear/quadratic/exponential growth and statistical analysis. Algebraic and graphical representation will be taught. You must have completed Enjoying Mathematics or Year 12 Mathematics at school to enrol in this course.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Confidently use formulae to analyse problems and calculate solutions.
  • Use mathematical and statistical approaches to interpret data.
  • Describe how modelling contributes to understanding of businesses and the environment.

Assessment
You will complete three assignments (worth 40% in total) and a final test (worth 60%). You are required to submit all coursework and sit the test to receive a final grade.

Introduction to Business

This course is compulsory in order to complete New Start for Business. It will introduce you to simple but widely applicable concepts and principles used by economists and accountants to understand business situations at both the level of the individual organisations. You will also look at the economic factors in different types of markets.

This course will prepare you for first year study within the Business School at The University of Auckland.

Learning outcomes
At the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of economic factors.
  • Explain and apply basic microeconomic principles to economic problems.
  • Analyse and discuss the major elements and concepts adopted in the preparation of a set of financial statements.

Assessment
You will complete two assignments (worth 25% each) and a final test (worth 50%). To complete the course you are required to submit all coursework and sit the test to receive a final grade.
