English language requirements

The University of Auckland sets standards for English Language proficiency for admission to the University for international students.

All applicants whose first language is not English will be required to provide satisfactory evidence of their proficiency in English. This could take the form of an IELTS or TOEFL score.

Minimum entry requirements for proof of English language proficiency
  IELTS (Academic)  Paper-based TOEFL  Internet-based TOEFL (iBT) 
 Undergraduate (UG) Overall score of 6.0
and all bands 5.5 or better
 
Overall score of 550
plus Essay (TWE) of 4.5
 
Overall score of 80
plus a Writing score of 21
 
 Postgraduate (PG) Overall score of 6.5
and all bands 6.0 or better
 
Overall score of 575
plus Essay (TWE) of 4.5
 
Overall score of 90
plus a Writing score of 21

IELTS/TOEFL Equivalencies for postgraduate students

Postgraduate applicants who have a conditional offer from The University of Auckland may be considered for entry to the Foundation Certificate in English for Academic Purposes (FCertEAP) or the 12 week fast track EAP programme at The University of Auckland English Language Academy (ELA).* For both programmes, students who gain a B-/B/B+ grade are deemed to have achieved an IELTS equivalency of 6.5 and students who gain an A-/A/A+ grade are deemed to have achieved an IELTS equivalency of 7.0.
