Why is health and travel insurance compulsory?

The New Zealand Government has determined that from 1st January 2004 all international students are required under the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students to have appropriate and current health and travel insurance for their period of study. The insurance also has to cover your travel to New Zealand to study. It is The University of Auckland’s responsibility, under the Code, to ensure that all international students have appropriate health and travel insurance - this is a condition of your enrolment.

The University of Auckland has been using Studentsafe-University as their preferred insurance policy for international students, since 2005. Studentsafe-University offers comprehensive health and travel insurance benefits, which meet the requirements of the Code. The University will apply the Studentsafe-University charge to your student account and default you to this insurance policy when you enrol and you will pay for this policy when you pay your tuition fees.

What if I already have insurance?

If your insurance policy does not appear on the compliant list, you need to purchase a compliant policy before you can enrol.

If you wish to select an alternative insurance provider, (that is not already on the compliant list) your insurance policy will have to be assessed by the University's independent brokers to ensure the policy meets the requirements of The University of Auckland’s policy standard. If your alternative insurance is deemed to meet the requirements, a waiver will be issued.

The cut off date for alternative policy assessments is two weeks prior to semester start date. If you bring/send your policy after the cut off date, you will be liable to pay for Studentsafe-University cover while your policy is being assessed.

Accepted Insurance Policies
Download the list of compliant policies accepted by The University of Auckland below.

pdf Compliant Policy List 2012 (76 KB PDF)

If you have any of these policies, you need to bring your original certificate of insurance and alternative policy waiver application form to the Insurance Administration Office within the timeframe allowed in order to get a full waiver.

Once we receive these documents a waiver is issued to remove the Studentsafe-University insurance fee on your Student account. Waivers must be received on or before the following dates:

Insurance Waiver Due Dates:
 Summer School  13 January 2012
 First Semester  9 March 2012
 Second Semester  27 July 2012
 1st Quarter  27 January 2012
 2nd Quarter  20 April 2012
 3rd Quarter  13 July 2012
 4th Quarter  5 October 2012
Doctoral  Within the month of enrolment start date

Any waivers received after these dates will not be accepted. If you enrolled late, you must bring your compliant insurance certificate in the same week you enrolled in order for a waiver to be processed.

Insurance waivers are not automatically processed unless you apply. You must apply for insurance waiver every semester you enrol in, (doctoral students every year).

Note - If you choose to cancel your insurance policy while you are suspended, exchange or overseas and commence your insurance cover when you return, it will be considered a new policy. This means that any medical conditions you received treatment for under the old policy will be considered pre-existing condition and will no longer be covered. Please see Vtoria or Rebecca at the International Office to discuss before you travel.

Non Accepted - Overseas Insurance Policies

Our experience is that most policies purchased overseas do not meet the guidelines set out in the Code of Practice and, therefore, do not meet The University of Auckland's policy standards.

Please note if your policy appears on this list, it will not be accepted by The University of Auckland.

Alternative Policy Assessment
If your policy does not appear on either list, then you MUST submit your full policy wording (in English) and certificate of insurance along with the waiver checklist requirement form for assessment.

Note: The cut off date for alternative policy assessments is two weeks prior to semester start dates.
