Accepting your offer

You will be given one of two offers:

  • A firm offer of admission
  • A conditional offer of admission

Both offers are sent as emails. The firm offer of admission is what must be printed to apply for a student visa through the nearest New Zealand Embassy or Consulate. Your email contains links to important information to help you prepare to come to Auckland.

You can accept an offer through www.apply.auckland.ac.nz

Before you accept your offer of admission make sure you upload any documents that you’ll need to enrol in your courses (for example course descriptions). Once you accept your offer you won’t be able to upload documents to your account.

The conditional offer means that you will be admitted to the University upon completion of the conditions set out in the letter you receive. Once the conditions have been met, a firm offer of admission will be issued to you. The conditional offer is not suitable for applying for a visa, but indicates that your application is almost complete.
If you accept a conditional offer, you don’t have to reaccept your firm offer.

Students who are not accepted into the Study Abroad or Exchange programmes will also be notified by email.

For more information see Applying for a student visa.

Work limitations on a student visa
Study Abroad students are not eligible to work in New Zealand.
Students studying for one semester are not eligible to work in New Zealand.

Under current regulations of the New Zealand Immigration Service, only Exchange students who are enrolled in a study programme of one academic year or more at a New Zealand tertiary institution may apply for a ”Variation of Conditions” to work in New Zealand.
Exchange students studying for one year may be granted a Variation of Conditions to their student permit to allow them to work during the academic year, and during any holidays within the academic year, for up to 20 hours in any given week.
To apply for a Variation of Conditions as part of your application for a student visa or permit, tick the option at E2 of the Student Visa/Permit Application (INZ 1012) on the NZ Immigration website.

The University of Auckland has taken all steps to ensure that this information was correct at time of publishing, but notes that changes may occur after publication. How to enrol

Once you’ve accepted your offer of admission you can enrol in courses or apply for permission to enrol in courses that have prerequisites. These are both done in Student Services Online. Please note that you can only enrol and/or request permission to enrol in 5 courses at a time, therefore it is important that you choose carefully.

Enrolment for Semester 1 2011 begins on 1 November 2010.

Choosing your courses
Study Abroad and Exchange students can select courses from a wide range of programmes offered at The University of Auckland, provided the relevant prerequisites are met.
For more information on how to choose the courses you want to take at The University of Auckland please see Choosing your courses.

Enrol in courses without prerequisites
Study Abroad and Exchange students can enrol in almost all courses that don’t have any prerequisites. Most courses without prerequisites are at Stage 1.
The following links have instructions and an online tutorial to help you enrol, drop and change courses. Once you’ve read the instructions you can sign into Student Services Online to enrol, drop or change your courses.

Enrol in courses with prerequisites
Study Abroad and Exchange students will not be able to enrol directly into classes that have any formal prerequisites. You will need to apply for a concession for admission to these courses. Once you’ve submitted an online concession, the relevant faculty will assess your previous study. If approved, you will automatically be enrolled in the course. Therefore it is important that you ensure you only seek concession for courses you intend to enrol in.

You can select a maximum of five concessions for one semester at one time and if your request is denied, you will not be able to resubmit an additional concession request for that course.

Be sure to send or upload any documents you need to apply for an enrolment concession (for example an updated transcript or course descriptions from your home university). Once you’ve accepted your offer of admission you won’t be able to upload documents to your account. If the course descriptions are online you can put the web link to them in your concession application. Transcripts need to be originals or verified copies and need to be sent as hard copies.

Instructions to apply for an enrolment concession
You will need to indicate the reason you’re requesting a concession for admission into a course. Use the text below so the faculties assessing your concession recognise you as Study Abroad or Exchange students:

I have been accepted to study at The University of Auckland through a Study Abroad or Exchange programme. I believe the following course(s) meet the prerequisite requirement for this course:
- (list courses from home university)
-
I have submitted course descriptions for the course(s) with my application or you can see the course description(s) here: (paste url)

Compulsory international health and travel insurance

All international students (including Study Abroad and Exchange students) must have appropriate health and travel insurance to cover the time they’re in New Zealand. The fee for this insurance is not covered by tuition fees so both Study Abroad and Exchange students need to pay this.

The University of Auckland has selected Studentsafe–University as the preferred insurance policy for our international students. Studentsafe–University offers excellent health and travel insurance benefits that meet the requirements covered in the Code of Practice guidelines.
As it is the University’s responsibility under the Code of Practice to ensure that all international students have appropriate health and travel insurance, the University applies a charge to all international student accounts. This charge is removed either after the student pays their Studentsafe–University premium or after they’re granted a waiver for an alternative insurance policy. Having insurance is a condition of enrolment; therefore, students must either pay the insurance charge or be granted a waiver in order for their enrolment to be complete.

International Health and Travel Insurance fees
Once you have enrolled in your courses at The University of Auckland, your International Insurance fee is generated. You need to pay this fee either online before you arrive or at the cashier’s office when you arrive on campus.

Once you arrive you may change your residential address, contact phone number or even email address. Please ensure that you include a New Zealand contact number here, as it is often easier to give you a call than to correspond via email on issues where timing is critical.

Ensuring that your student ID card is produced before you arrive

You must have a Student ID card, and carry it with you on campus. You need the card to access some University services, and you may be asked to present it as proof that you are a student of the University.
To ensure that your Student ID card is completed prior to your arrival, you will need to:

  1. Enrol in at least one course at The University of Auckland.
  2. Send an appropriate photograph. The photograph must be:
  • Less than six months old.
  • No sunglasses may be worn. Tinted prescription glasses may be worn, provided the eyes are still visible.
  • A true image and not altered in any way.
  • Clear, sharp and in focus with minimum reflective light on face.
  • Without hats, head coverings, or head bands, unless for religious purposes.
  • With a plain, light coloured background (not white or dark).
  • Coloured photo on photographic paper or email an image file.
  • Approximately 50mm x 40mm in size (standard passport photo).
  • A full-front view of face, head and shoulders only. Eyes must be open.

Once these two steps have been completed, the International Office will initiate the production of your Student ID card. The process takes around two weeks. If you begin enrolment late, this will impact on the time that your Student ID card becomes available.
Student ID cards can be collected from the International Student Centre (Building 104) from 9am - 3pm, Monday to Friday. You need to show your student visa to pick up your Student ID card.
