Both programmes involve studying away from your home institution for one or two semesters, but there are important differences between the programmes.

Eligibility for study at The University of Auckland

Academic eligibility
You must have completed at least one full time year at university before attending the Study Abroad or Exchange programmes at The University of Auckland. You must also have a better-than-average academic record, particularly in your major subject and in your most recent academic year of study.

English language requirements
The University of Auckland requires all students whose first language is not English to demonstrate their proficiency in the English language. Where English is the medium of instruction at a student's home university, this may be accepted as evidence of adequate English language proficiency.
The University of Auckland's accepts IELTS and TOEFL. Minimum required scores are:

  • Overall band score of 6.0 in the Academic Module, with no band less than 5.5 in IELTS.
  • Internet-based TOEFL score of 80 with a writing score of at least 21. 
  • Paper-based TOEFL score of 550 with a TWE of at least 4.5.

You must submit results from either of these tests. Higher scores may be required for some programmes, including postgraduate study.

Important dates

The academic year
There are two intakes per year for the Study Abroad and Exchange programmes.

  • Semester One: late February to late June
  • Semester Two: mid July to mid November

You can apply to study for one or two semester, beginning in either Semester One or Semester Two.
Summer School (January - February) may be available for the Study Abroad programme.

International Orientation

  • Semester One 2010: Monday 22 February - 26 February 2010
  • Semester Two 2010: Tuesday 13 July - 16 July 2010

Application due dates

These deadlines allow us to process your application in time for the semester start and give you up to six weeks for the processing of your student visa, which you must obtain before entering New Zealand. Applications can take up to six weeks to process, so please be patient.

Programme costs for study at The University of Auckland

All students

  • Compulsory health and travel insurance (a requirement of the NZ government)
  • Cost of living (including accommodation)

Exchange
Exchange students studying at The University of Auckland pay tuition fees to their home institution, based on the fee requirements at their home institution. This also covers the International Orientation programme, access to Student Services and membership of the University of Auckland Students Association (AUSA).

Study Abroad
Study Abroad students pay a single flat fee, which covers tuition fees for a full time course of study. This also covers the International Orientation programme, access to Student Services and membership of the University of Auckland Students Association (AUSA).

2011 Study Abroad Semester Fee NZ$11,760

Tuition fees for 2011 apply to Semester One (February-June) and Semester Two (July-November) 2011 only. Fees for 2012 are subject to change and will not be confirmed until approximately September 2011. At that time fees will be set for Semester One (February-June) and Semester Two (July-November) 2012 only.

Supporting documentation

You apply for the Study Abroad or Exchange programmes online. To complete your application you will need to submit:

  • Official academic transcript, in English, showing your current (and previous, if applicable) undergraduate and/or postgraduate studies at university,
  • Official nomination letter from your home university (Exchange students only), 
  • If applicable, original IELTS or TOEFL results, or a verified copy,
  • Course outlines, in English, for courses you have studied at your home university that are equivalent to prerequisites for your proposed University of Auckland courses,
  • For students interested in taking Stage 2 or 3 Fine Arts courses they need to submit a portfolio and a written statement. Please contact the Study Abroad and Exchange team for more information.
  • Verified copy of details page of your passport (not identity card or driver's licence) or birth certificate, 
  • 1 colour, passport-style photo (4cm x 5cm) on a coloured background with your name printed legibly on the back,

We give priority attention to applications that are complete and contain all of the required accompanying materials. Incomplete applications may result in lengthy delays.

* "Verified" means the document is signed, dated and stamped by a Justice of the Peace, solicitor, notary public, exchange coordinator or other authorised agent. Contact the International Office for more information on which authorities can verify documents in your home country.
