Study Abroad or Exchange

Both programmes involve studying away from your home institution for one or two semesters, but there are important differences between the programmes.

Exchange programme

  • Your home institution must be a University of Auckland partner through a formal exchange agreement
  • You must be nominated for the program by the exchange coordinator of your home institution
  • The University of Auckland must accept your application
  • If selected, you remain enrolled with your home institution
  • You continue to pay your home institution fees, and are exempt from University of Auckland tuition fees
  • The courses you study may be credited towards your degree
  • You apply for COPEX (Certificate of Proficiency - Exchange) at The University of Auckland

Study Abroad programme
If your home institution does not have a formal exchange agreement with the University of Auckland, or if the exchange numbers are unevenly balanced, you can apply to participate in the Study Abroad programme.

  • You can study at The University of Auckland for one or two semesters
  • You will pay fees to The University of Auckland
  • You must check with your home institution's Study Abroad office regarding credit towards your home degree
  • You may apply directly to The University of Auckland or through one of our overseas agents
  • You apply for COPOS (Certificate of Proficiency - Overseas) at The University of Auckland
