German Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst Scholarships
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD, or Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) funds the further academic and personal qualifications of outstanding German undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as young academics and researchers.
German students interested in studying or researching at The University of Auckland can apply for DAAD scholarships. There are various scholarships available, ranging from one semester to a full academic year. Applications for these scholarships must be directly to the DAAD in Germany.

Important information and advice on the application process
Students must complete an online application form and submit application documents to the DAAD. These application documents include:
- Printout of online application form
- Academic transcripts
- Copy of Abitur certificate
- CV
- Letter of motivation
- List of which courses they want to take at the overseas institution
- Evidence of English proficiency
- Reference letter and assessment comments from a professorat home university
- For some fields of study (e.g. law, medicine, and architecture), additional documents are required

Applicants are expected to be well informed about New Zealand’s history, culture, political and economic situation. In addition to this, they must give good reasons for why they want to study at The University of Auckland and explain how a semester at the University would supplement their studies. Candidates are chosen by independent academic selection committees for their academic performance and their personality. The selection process may include an interview.
Selection for DAAD scholarships is based on academic and personal qualification. Scholarships are available to Germans who are matriculated full-time or who have graduated from a recognised tertiary institution in Germany. Under certain circumstances other individuals may also be entitled to funding.
As part of the application, students must provide one of the following documents as evidence of their English language proficiency:
- DAAD form Sprachzeugnis für deutsche Bewerber
- UNIcert certificate
- TOEFL
- IELTS
Please note that the English proficiency requirements for DAAD scholarships may differ from the English proficiency requirements for the programme you want to enrol in at The University of Auckland.
Students should start planning their study or research abroad about one-and-a-half years in advance as the application deadlines for DAAD scholarships can be more than one year before the start of the intended semester/year abroad.
