Renewing your student visa or permit

Who can apply?

To obtain a student visa you must be enrolled in at least 3 courses or 45 points per semester (excludes Exchange & Study Abroad students who must take 4 courses). If you are studying less than this, please discuss your situation with staff at the International Student Information Centre, as restrictions apply.

How do I apply?

Please download and complete The University of Auckland Visa Application PDF form below.
All student visa applications must be submitted at least one week prior to the expiry date of the current student visa. No student visa application will be accepted for processing within 7 days of the expiry date.

You can pick up a hard copy of the visa application form from the International Student Information Centre, which is open 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday.

Required documentation

 Documents to be included with this visa application

  • Two passport-size photographs - the photographs must be less than six months old.
  • You must be enrolled in at least 3 courses or 45 points per semester (excludes Exchange & Study Abroad students who must take 4 courses). If you are studying less than this, please discuss your situation with a staff member at the International Student Information Centre, as restrictions apply.
  • Transcript – (not applicable to a new student) - ensure it is a record of your entire period of study at the University (print this from Student Services Online)
    - If you have failed 50% or more of your courses in the last semester, befor applying for your student visa please see Rebecca Walkinton at the International Student Information Centre or  email r.walkinton@auckland.ac.nz to make an appointment. 
  • Proof of your UoA tuition fees have been paid (print out your statement & receipt from Student Services Online - refer to the additional informatoin on page 8 of the application form)
  • Proof of Funds – please refer to the evidence of funds on page 7 of the application form
  • Evidence of outward travel – please refer to attached evidence of funds on page 7 on the application form
  • Your passport (ensure that you have sufficient blank pages and the passport expiry date is no less than 3 months)
  • A receipt of $150 for Online Student Visa Renewal Application (payment via EFTPOS or Visa/Master Card at the International Student Information Centre) We regret we are unable to accept cash payments

  • If you are under 18 years old you must submit a guarantee of accommodation. Please see Rebecca Walkinton at the International Student Information Centre of email

It is your responsibility to contact Immigration New Zealand for information regarding the validity of your:

  • medical certificate
  • police certificate

Medical Certificates

  • Medical Certificates are to be submitted every 36 months or when requested by Immigration New Zealand
     

Police Certificates

  • A police certificate from your home country must be submitted every 36 months

Please ensure that your Auckland contact details (address and phone number/s are always updated on Student Serivces Online.

Please note: You cannot travel outside New Zealand whilst your visa application is processing.

Visa renewal fee

The total charge for renewing your student visa on campus is NZ$150.00. This fee is non-refundable, so please ensure that you meet all the criteria and provide all the necessary documentation. If you have any queries or concerns about applying for your student visa on campus, please contact the International Student Information Centre before you pay the fee.

Payment can be made by EFTPOS or credit card at the International Student Information Centre.  We are sorry but we are unable to accept cash payments.

When do I apply?

You must submit your online student visa application to the International Student Information Centre at least 7 days before your current visa is due to expire.


The International Student Information Centre can only accept online student visa applications for processing before 2pm. If you come into the International Student Information Centre after 2pm with your online student visa application we will request you to return the next day between 9am and 2pm.


Please Note:
You can apply for an online student visa (on campus at the International Student Information Centre) for two consecutive semesters however, these semesters must be in the same academic year (for example Semester 1 and 2, 2012).


If you would like to apply for a student visa which covers two semesters in different academic years (for example Semester 2, 2012 and Semester 1, 2013) you will need to submit a manual application directly through Immigration New Zealand. You cannot apply on campus at the International Student Information Centre.

Apply through Immigration New Zealand

You can download the student visa application form from the Immigration New Zealand webpage and send your completed application directly to Immigration New Zealand (INZ).

The application must include an application fee of NZ$220.00, proof of your enrolment (you can obtain this at the International Student Information Centre)and your full academic transript (unofficial academic transcript is acceptable).

A list of documents required when applying through Immigration New Zealand can be collected from the International Student Information Centre.

Glossary of terms

Granted

You have successfully fulfilled criteria to be granted a visa.


Medical and police certificates 

All international students will initially need to have a full medical check up and provide a Police Report from their home country. Subsequent full medical checks and police certificates from your home country are required every 36 months.

Visa
A visa (other than a transit visa) authorises the holder to travel to or stay in New Zealand (or both), in accordance with the conditions of the visa.
