About the university

UCL is among the world's top universities. 21 Nobel prize-winners have come from the UCL community.
UCL has a global reach and global vision and 34% of UCL students come from outside the UK, attracted from nearly 140 countries around the globe.

UCL was founded in 1826 as a radically different university, opening up English higher education for the first time to people of all beliefs and social backgrounds. That radical tradition remains alive today. UCL research strategy commits to addressing UCL’s ‘Grand Challenges’, by working together right across the university in order to tackle the problems that face us today.

Course information
Exchange students must indicate a preferred department as part of your application to UCL. You will have to take at least 50% of your course-load in this department.

For a full list of available courses, please visit the UCL website:

Course restrictions
Law courses, intermediate and advanced level Economics courses, and English Literature and Language courses are not available to exchange students.

Course load
Programmes consist of a series of lectures, seminars and tutorials and, in science and engineering subjects, laboratory classes, which in total account for about 15 hours per week.
The majority of courses have a value of 0.5 CU, although some, such as the research project completed in the final year of most degrees, carry a greater weighting. You are expected to complete 4.0 CUs each year which generally means taking around eight courses in each year.
UCL’s participation in ECTS can assist with access to educational and employment opportunities throughout Europe. At UCL, 0.5 CU is deemed equivalent to 7.5 ECTS credits. A full year’s workload of 4 CUs is 60 ECTS credits.

Non-EEA/EU citizens staying for under 6 months get partial access to medical care from the National Health Service (NHS).

If your course of study is for six months or more you will qualify for NHS treatment like anyone who is ordinarily resident in the UK. Not all services are free, for example, prescriptions must be paid for.
