Terms of exchange

Period of exchange: Full year preferred - single semesters possible, but student must state reason.
Level: Undergraduate/postgraduate
Admission restrictions: Students on exchange for just the January term will not be allowed to enrol in the second half of full-year courses. Limited enrolment into computer science, visual studies, drama and electrical engineering.

The following are not open to exchange students: Management (MBA), medicine, nursing, pharmacy, sciences courses in biochemistry.

The university

Founded in 1827 by Royal Charter, the University of Toronto is now over 175 years old, the largest university in Canada and the fifth largest in North America. It operates three major campuses covering 2.8 square kilometres of land. At the university, professors of international calibre bring leading research and scholarship to bear on their teaching and provide opportunities for study and discovery at the forefront of the sciences, social sciences and humanities.

The University's 50 libraries, among them Canada's largest research library and dozens of specialized facilities in the colleges, faculties and schools, contain more than eight million volumes and a plethora of other material.

Over the last 20 years, The University of Toronto faculty received almost 25 percent of Canada's prestigious research awards, although they represent only 7 percent of all Canadian professors.

The city of Toronto

Located on the north shore of Lake Ontario, Toronto is one of the most accessible cities in North America by road, air, rail and water. It is only an hour’s drive for about five million Canadians, and within a 90-minute flight for 60 percent of the U.S. population. It has a high quality of life, reliable services, and is one of the safest urban environments in the world.

According to the United Nations, Toronto is the most ethnically diverse city in the world. A remarkable 41 percent of its population was born outside of Canada. The city is home to more than 80 ethnic groups and more than 100 languages, and is marked by an incredible diversity of distinct neighbourhoods, cultures and communities.

Toronto neighbourhoods include Little Italy (west of College/Bathurst), Queen Street West (a soho-style strip east of Spadina Avenue), the Entertainment District (bounded by Front and King Streets, University and Spadina Avenues), the Fashion District (Spadina and King), Greektown on Danforth Avenue, Little India (Gerrard Street East), three Chinatowns, and so much more!

Course load: The University's definition of "full-time" study varies according to e percent of a regular course load to be considered full-time.

Minimum Course Load - 2.5 Credits (courses) per Semester
Maximum Course Load - 3.0 Credits (courses) per Semester

Orientation

The University operates a 'buddy programme' for international students where local students are matched with new students to provide support in getting settled into Toronto. The International Centre also runs different trips to places like Niagara Falls, Northern Lakes, indigenous sites, skiing, and hiking etc.

Accommodation

Options for accommodation are University Halls (of which there are 13), single studio apartments, and shared accommodation. The Housing service can help with finding suitable accommodation. Interested students may submit their accommodation request on their exchange application for Toronto. The ISXO is responsible for all on-campus placements, and will notify you if you have been awarded a room. Students are NOT to contact on-campus university residences directly.

A study Permit may be necessary (required if staying more than 6 months) and highly recommended in case you want to work or extend your stay.

Medical insurance

Compulsory and provided for all international students by International Student Services. Additional insurance may be needed to travel from/to your home country.
