Monitoring and Measuring Health and Safety Standard


The University monitors health and safety performance to be sure that the operational practice lives up to its plans. It supports the 'no surprises' approach. This standard sets out the University’s expectations, and gives assurances that the ‘on the ground’ arrangements are effective and continuously improving.


All staff members and students at the University


To provide the basis for all faculties, schools, departments and services to regularly monitor and review their health and safety activities to identify objectives, assess risks, implement control measures and to check progress



1.    Each school/department and service is to be inspected using an approved checklist to ensure they meet expected health and safety standards every twelve months

2.    High risk areas are to be checked every six months


3.    The health and safety performance of each faculty and service division is to be reviewed once a year

4.    Findings are to be recorded in the faculty / service division risk register

5.    The self-assessment performance questionnaire provided by the Health, Safety and Wellbeing service must be completed by each school/ service and returned by November each year

6.    All high risk areas are to be identified in the annual plan and corrective action is to be taken

7.    The Health, Safety and Wellbeing service is to review progress against agreed plans


8.    The Health, Safety and Wellbeing service is to provide every faculty / service division with an audit within a three year period

Local benchmarking

9.    Trends in accidents and near misses are to be analysed at a local level and then presented four times a year at faculty/ service division Health and Safety Committee, and at the University Health, Safety and Wellbeing Committee

10. Once a year the Health, Safety and Wellbeing service are to analyse the accident / incident information from USHA (the Universities Safety and Health Association) and ‘Group of Eight’ for benchmarking, comparison, and trend analysis across the sector


11. Areas records are to be kept of all monitoring activity for at least three years

University means the University of Auckland and includes all subsidiaries
