Practical Skills for IDI Data Analysis

A hands-on course covering skills required to undertake data analysis in the IDI, within a real Datalab environment and using real IDI data.

Prerequisites

This course requires a basic theoretical knowledge of the IDI. We recommend that course participants complete the VHIN Introduction to Research in the IDI course prior to completing this one. If you have not completed that course and would like to enrol in this one, please email us, and we will put you in touch with the instructors, to discuss whether this course is suitable for you.

This course requires some basic programming in SQL and there is some support provided for this. If you have coded in another program previously (e.g. R, SAS, Stata), you will probably have no problems. If you have not written statistical code before then please contact us so that we can discuss whether the course will be suitable for you. If you would like a thorough introduction to SQL, we also offer a four-day online course, Introduction to SQL.

Course outline

This course provides a practical computer-based introduction to some of the key skills and knowledge needed to undertake data analysis in the Integrated Data Infrastructure (IDI). Participants will work in a real Datalab environment with real IDI data. On the first day of this three-day course, you will undertake induction and confidentiality training with StatsNZ to enable you to safely access the IDI environment. If you have previously completed this training, you may skip the first half day of the course and join after lunch on Day 1.

The course will cover:

  • Induction and confidentiality training with StatsNZ
  • Logging in and navigating the IDI environment
  • How to link tables together
  • How to choose and create a base population
  • Adding demographic and other information to your population
  • Understanding missing data in the IDI
  • Removing people from the population due to death or out-migration
  • Finding and using metadata
  • Preparing data for output
  • Using the output checking tool and submitting an output.

Who should enrol?
Researchers and analysts who are planning to use IDI data in the Datalab environment. The course covers basic skills and is best suited to those with no or very little IDI experience. This is a hands-on course and is only suitable for people who will be working directly with IDI data. Supervisors, managers, and others who will not be working directly with IDI data will get more benefit from our theory-based course, VHIN Introduction to Research in the IDI.
