Business information technologies

The Business and Information Technologies (BIT) project was undertaken by a consortium of international units led by a research group at the University of California in Los Angeles. The project tracked the impact of information technologies on business practices globally through a commonly administered survey.

New Zealand participated for the first time in 2008, through the Centre of Digital Enterprise (CODE). More than 100 ICT executives from industries throughout the country participated in the survey, which provided a critical snapshot of the use of IT in organisations in New Zealand and an indication of upcoming trends.

The results of the survey were presented at an event on 30 March 2008 at the University of Auckland Business School. The co-authors of the report were Professor Ananth Srinivasan and Professor Margo Buchanan-Oliver. Research assistants were Christoph Breidbach (PhD Student) and Jesse Candy (Postgraduate Student).

Service science

In 2007, CODE facilitated and coordinated a multi-disciplinary postgraduate course in service science – a newly conceptualised area of enquiry. The disciplines were Marketing, Information Systems and Operations Management (ISOM), Accounting and Finance, MER, Computer Science, and Health Informatics. This postgraduate programme was continued in 2008.

Also in 2008, CODE – in partnership with the Centre of Information Technology and the Networked Economy (CITNE) and with IBM Research Labs – conducted research on the then newly emerging discipline of service science. This research was published and presented at:

  • The 1st International Conference on Service in Emerging Markets (23-24 September 2010) held at the ISB and chaired by IBM Research Labs (Bangalore and Almaden). In November 2008, CODE hosted the Global Mobility Roundtable (consisting of international research academics, business leaders and policy makers in mobile technologies). This conference featured a keynote address by Dr Paul Maglio, IBM Labs (Almaden) which introduced the service science concept to the global academic audience attending the roundtable.

Shaping the body and technology: Discursive implications for the marketing communications of technical products

Led by Professor Margo Buchanan-Oliver, Angela Cruz (masters student), and Professor Jonathan Schroeder, this project provided a theoretical analysis of contemporary brand communication for technology products. The researchers focused on how the human body functions as a metaphorical and communicative device, to shed insight into how technological brands make their products understandable, tangible and attractive in interesting ways.

The paper, "Shaping the Body and Technology: Discursive Implications for the Marketing Communications of Technological Products", appeared in European Journal of Marketing, 2010, in volume 44, issue number 5, pages 635-652.

Competition issues in telecommunication networks

This project ignited the research work on competition issues in telecommunication networks. Investigation showed that the case time is decomposed into slots and each provider has a fixed capacity. If demand exceeds capacity, the provider can only serve up to its capacity and each infinitesimal user is rejected with the same probability (this is a major difference with the literature where the externality is latency rather than loss).

We were able to characterise the demand Wardrop equilibrium for any given price combination. Given this demand distribution and mild conditions over costs incurred by providers, we have proved and expressed in closed form the existence and uniqueness of a Nash equilibrium for the price competition.
