Soft power of Russia, China, and the EU: Perceptions of students in Kazakhstan's top universities

Abstract
The seminar will provide an overview of the evolving perceptions of ‘soft’ power among Kazakhstan's ‘emerging young elites’ – students from the leading national universities. Based on the methods and results of his 2022 representative survey of about 800 respondents and 14 in-person focus groups, the speaker will share his insights into an innovative theoretical framework engaging with the Strategic Narratives Theory.

Bio
John Irgengioro is a PhD fellow at the Ghent Institute of International and European Studies (GIES), Ghent University, Belgium. He is currently a visiting research fellow at the Department of Media and Communication of the University of Canterbury. His research focuses on the ‘soft’ power reception among students of prestigious universities in Kazakhstan.
