Career: ESOL and Chinese language teacher
Programme: Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary)
“After working as an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) teacher in China for several years, I felt that it was time for me to pursue a degree specialising in teaching to enhance my knowledge of teaching practices and theories. I also wanted to focus on teaching teenagers.
“I chose to study the Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary) because it will qualify me to teach in secondary schools in New Zealand.
“Another benefit of this programme is that I have two options of subjects to teach, which are ESOL and Chinese, making it more flexible for me when seeking employment opportunities.
“I really enjoy the task-based approach for teaching languages. The lectures have enhanced my understanding of the theories, helped me to reflect back on my previous teaching and assisted me in making lesson-planning decisions.
“I also enjoy the practicum, which give students the opportunity to work alongside experienced teachers, get familiar with the New Zealand secondary school system, and have a real interaction with teachers and students.
“The experiences I have gained will be valuable for my future career.
“The teaching quality at the University is very high and the faculty staff provide efficient and warm support.
“Studying in a culturally diverse campus has also been a positive and eye-opening experience for me.”
