Application Process - Reading Recovery specialisation

Three steps are needed to complete your application. Please make sure you have completed all steps by following the instructions on this page.

Step 1: Apply for selection for the Tutor Training Course to National Reading Recovery

a) CV and Statement of Suitability

Applicants will be expected to provide both a CV and a written statement describing their suitability for Reading Recovery Tutor training according to the following criteria.

It is expected that applicants:

  • Have at least three years successful junior school teaching
  • Some experience in professional leadership or managerial roles
  • Can show evidence of ongoing professional development or academic study

Professional qualities include:

  • Openness to new learning.
  • The ability to assume an educative role in the community regarding literacy initiatives and implementations.
  • The capability to undertake an advanced research and academic training programme.
  • Good team and organisational skills.

Applicants must be registered teachers but do not need to have had Reading Recovery teacher training. A current driver’s licence is required.

Please Note: Include in your application a statement about your availability to take up a Tutor position anywhere in New Zealand from the end of 2020 and subsequently.

b) Confidential Referees

Candidates are asked to nominate two referees who will provide a detailed, confidential, and signed statement on their professional/academic career as relevant to the Reading Recovery Tutor application. Applicants need to ensure that the referees send these directly by post or email to National Reading Recovery before the closing date.

Step 2: Apply for admission to the University of Auckland

This process is necessary in order to verify you are eligible, if selected, to enrol in a Postgraduate Diploma in Education. Your application for training cannot be considered until your eligibility is confirmed by the University. As verification of documents may be necessary, please allow ample time.

Click on the "Apply now" button and on the application page, select "Start your application for admission".

For your programme, select the following values:

  • Programme type: Postgraduate Diploma/Certificate
  • Programme name: PG Dip in Education
  • Major or specialisation: Reading Recovery (Specialisation)
  • Start term: 2020 Semester One
  • Campus: Epsom

Step 3: Apply for a Study Award from Teach NZ (if eligible)

Apply for a Reading Recovery Tutor Study Award. TeachNZ will award a study award to successful candidates.

Go to and look in 'Teacher Study Awards › Primary Teachers' to apply.
