NVivo Core Skills

This introductory course will cover the principles behind this software package, and teach the basics of setting-up and working in an NVivo project.

NVivo is the most widely used qualitative data analysis package internationally, and is certainly the most popular choice amongst New Zealand researchers. Previously, qualitative researchers have used highlighter pens, index cards, or even a pair of scissors to analyse their qualitative data. With the advent of packages such as NVivo, we are now able to achieve the exact same result electronically. Advantages in doing so include increased flexibility in handling data, easier retrieval of coded information, and analysis tools that allow you to ask questions of the coding that you have conducted. NVivo won’t analyse your data for you, but it will certainly make your life easier when dealing with qualitative data, particularly in the analysis stages.

As well as providing an overview of the software, this training course aims to introduce the range of data types that you can work with and code in NVivo. This includes word documents, PDFs, spreadsheets, databases, webpages/social media data, audio, video, and images. More advanced features such as queries and visualisations will also be demonstrated, and options for learning more about these discussed.

Key content

  • The NVivo project interface
  • Creating and working with projects
  • Preparing, importing, and working with data
  • Creating and working with nodes (coding)
