New Start overview

Over 20 and thinking of coming to university? New Start is a part-time preparation and bridging programme.

It's a realistic introduction to your first year with us. The courses include study skills and are made up of an academic integrity course, lectures, tutorials, workshops, assignments with feedback and a final test.

You can:

  • Assess your academic ability and improve your study skills
  • Study part-time on day or evening courses
  • Discover what university is all about
  • Gain an insight into subjects to make an informed choice for further study
  • Meet experienced university lecturers and tutors

Admission to Arts, Business, Communication, Education and Social Work, and Law will depend on your final grade from New Start. Please note each undergraduate programme may have additional entry requirements for admission.

You need to select the particular New Start course that will set up a pathway to your undergraduate degree programme. We recommend you seek advice from an undergraduate adviser or contact our New Start Office for more information.

The entry requirements are simple. You must be 20 years or over and a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident. You also need a good standard of English.

We welcome everyone with the potential and drive to succeed. Many capable people don't do very well at school, so please don't let that hold you back from applying.
