Graduating with a University degree is a very special moment for you, your whanau and friends. Here at the University of Auckland, we want you to succeed, and we realise that sometimes all you need is a little help to get started. So let’s get started!


If you are a Māori or Pacific school leaver, and you want to be prepared academically for study, get a head start or if you did not gain university entrance, this two-semester programme can prepare you and help you to gain entry into a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science programme.

Tertiary Foundation Certificate

If you left school with limited qualifications, this one-year, full-time programme enables you to gain a university entrance qualification.

New Start

If you’re over 20 and it's been a while since you studied, a New Start programme or workshop could be for you. New Start programmes are part-time courses designed to prepare you for entry into a range of degrees at the University of Auckland.

Foundation Certificate Education and Foundation Certificate Tohu Tūāpapa Mātauranga

The Faculty of Education and Social Work offers two Foundation Certificates which can lead you to further study in teaching, human services, physical education or social work, including a specialised programme for those who want to develop their te reo Māori skills. Both are one-year, full-time courses.

Hikitia te ora – Certificate in Health Sciences

The Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences offers this one year, full-time certificate course to students of Māori and Pacific descent who would like a career as a health professional. Successful completion of this course will make you eligible to apply to study Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy or  Health Sciences with us.
