Applying for LLB Part II

To apply and enrol in the Part II LLB programme, follow the steps below.

Apply for admission

If you are applying to transfer to LLB Part II at the University of Auckland for the first time, if you have applied before, or if it has been more than a year since you last studied here, please read 'How to apply for undergraduate admission' and follow the steps.   

If you were enrolled in LLB Part I at the University of Auckland in 2018 or prior, and wish to apply for a place in LLB Part II, you can click Apply now and click “Let’s get started”.  Once the Applications page appears, please select “Apply for another programme” and follow the steps.

When completing the “Programme Selection”, please note the following:

*Programme Type: Bachelors
*Programme Name:
E.g. Bachelor of Laws, or Conjoint: BA/LLB etc
*Major or Specialisation:

Law

(Note: If you are applying for conjoint, you still need to select Law as one of your specialisations.)

*Start Term
2019 Semester One
*Campus City

Please make sure you click Submit application at the end. Your applications summary page should appear with a green message box indicating “Application successfully submitted”.

Remember to submit your online application no later than 1 December of the year preceding the year you wish to enrol.

Admission to LLB Part II in 2019

Places in LLB Part II are limited and all applications go through a selection process. There is also an enrolment limit on each of the LLB Part II courses. This allocation includes returning Part II students. To be considered for selection into LLB Part II in 2019, applicants need to have:

  • Passed LAW 121G with at least a B- grade (C+ for students applying under UTAS schemes)

AND

  • Passed LAW 131 and LAW 141 (or their equivalents at another New Zealand law school) with at least a C+ 

AND

  • Gained at least 75 points (or the equivalent) of non-law university degree courses

AND

  • Passed at least eight courses (120 points) with an overall average LawGPA of 3.00(C+) 

Please note: LAW 141 Legal Foundations is a new course, offered for the first time in 2018. You will need to have passed LAW 141 Legal Foundations, as well as LAW 121G and LAW 131.

LAW 141 is offered in the second semester. To be eligible to take LAW 141, you will need to have passed LAW 121G with at least a B- grade (C+ for UTAS students).

Entry into LLB Part II for 2019 will be calculated on the basis of your LawGPA. This is a specially calculated (non-standard) GPA which is used for the purpose of admission to LLB Part II. It includes grades from both your law and non-law courses, as follows:

  • LAW 121G
  • LAW 131 – double weighted
  • LAW 141 – double weighted
  • Most recent, best 75 points from non-law courses

If you have repeated LAW 121G, LAW 131, LAW 141 or all three courses to improve your grade, please note that both your first and second attempts will be factored in when the Law GPA is calculated. The overall average grade required for selection into LLB Part II can vary from year to year, depending on the number of applicants.

For 2019, there is guaranteed entry to LLB Part II for all students who qualify for general admission with a LawGPA of 6.5 (midway between B+ and A-) or higher. It is possible that once students who received guaranteed entry have been admitted there may be some places available for students with a slightly lower LawGPA.

How is LawGPA calculated?

Averages are calculated on the following scale:

A+ A A- B+ B B- C+ C C-

In calculating the LawGPA, 'withdrawals', 'did not sit' and 'did not complete' results are counted as zero, except where:

  • Courses (other than LAW 121G, LAW 131 and LAW 141) taken in the same year total more than 75 points

OR

  • You can demonstrate that the 'withdrawal', 'did not sit' or 'did not complete' result was due to extraordinary and significant circumstances beyond your control and documentary evidence can be produced. Application needs to be made in writing to the Selection Committee in December of the year in which you are applying.

Apply under UTAS

LLB Part II applicants who wish to be considered under the Undergraduate Targeted Admission Schemes (UTAS) for Maori applicants, Pacific applicants, applicants with disabilities, applicants from refugee backgrounds, applicants from low socio-economic backgrounds or applicants who have suffered unforeseen hardship must apply in the first instance on SSO as above by 1 December.

The Law School requires further supplementary information from students applying under the UTAS for Maori applicants, Pacific applicants, applicants with disabilities, applicants from refugee backgrounds or applicants who have suffered unforeseen hardship. The supplementary application forms are available on the Law School website as well as from the Law School Student Centre.

It is important to complete the relevant questionnaire and return it to the Law School Student Centre by the due date specified on the form. You may subsequently be required to attend an interview. Please ensure your contact address and telephone number are up-to-date on Student Services Online.

Accept your offer of admission

You can check the status of your application by signing into your Application for Admission. Please see How to check your application status.

Offers of places for LLB Part II are usually notified around the end of December. If you have not heard by early February you should contact the Faculty of Law.

There are a limited number of places in the LLB Part II programme. If you do not accept your position in the programme by the date specified on the Offer of Place letter, we cannot guarantee you a place in the programme. Please see How to accept or decline an offer of place.

Enrol in classes

If you have not completed any Part II Law courses, or if you are a new student to the university, you cannot enrol until you have applied for admission to the LLB Part II programme, have been offered a place and have accepted the offer.

If you are already in the LLB Part II programme as a returning student, you can enrol in your remaining Law Part II courses through SSO from the Monday of the first week of November for the following academic year.

Although you have been admitted to or are returning to the LLB Part II programme, the faculty has limitations on enrolments in many of its courses and does not guarantee you a place in the stream or classes of your choice. Enrol as early as you can to avoid disappointment.

Using your login and password, enrol in your courses via Student Services Online. You can find out how to read your programme requirements report, view course information and start enrolling in a course through How to view your programme requirements.
