Flooding Incident in Architecture and Planning Building (421W)

22 October 2019

Update 5.30pm Wed 23 October

Despite power and other services coming back on, there are still a lot of power leads running around the building while rooms are dried, and there is pressure testing scheduled on pipework. So it is still not suitable for staff to return to the affected offices in 421W. If you need to collect personal items, you can request it through Faculty management who will then ask Security to assist.

Update 3.45pm Tues 22 October

Due to yesterday’s flooding, the ex-Architecture library space (B423: Room 246) will not be available as a study space from 9.00am 23 October to 2pm 26 October.

Alternative study spaces will be made available over this time in the ClockTower Great Hall (B105: Room 101) which will be open 9.00am-6.30pm for the next 3 days (Wed-Fri) and 9.00am-2.00pm on Sat 26 Oct. Libraries and Learning Services staff will be in the Great Hall occasionally over the next few days.

The following are also available as study spaces:

  • B402: Level 3
  • B201E Level 3
  • B119 ClockTower East Wing

10.30am Tues 22 October

A flooding incident yesterday afternoon has closed the western wing of the Architecture and Planning building (421W), and this part of the building, including the Level 3 studio, is not in use for the remainder of this week.

The cause of the flooding was a joint rupture in a chilled water pipe on Level 5 and the water flowed onto lower floors.

The impact is expected to be minimal and students have not been disadvantaged. Some student project presentations were in the affected area but were successfully moved before water damage could occur.

End of year examinations are proceeding as planned.

Teaching spaces in the building have been disrupted and alternative arrangements are in place. These will be communicated to relevant staff and students as details become available.

Some Architecture & Planning staff offices have also been affected, and those staff have been informed.

Limited access to the affected building will be available for any students and staff who need to collect personal items or papers. If you need access, please go to the CAI Student Contact Centre from 12noon today and a Security guard will escort you into the building. This access will only be available every hour, on the hour, until 5.00pm today and tomorrow (Wednesday).
