When and where to look

Not sure where to start? Get an idea of when and where to look for a flat.

Start searching early

If you plan on going flatting at the start of the University year you should begin your search early, especially as there could be many other students looking at the same time. However, it’s important to remember when looking early that rental periods on most leases begin straight away. This means that in order to secure a flat, you may have to begin paying rent before the semester starts.

Searching online

The most popular website for finding rental listings in Auckland is Trademe.

If you are interested in finding online search options other than Trademe, such as a real estate agency, we recommend that you contact our external accommodation advisor.

Word of mouth

Chatting to friends and other University of Auckland students is another great way to find private accommodation. Landlords often prefer to let to someone referred by an existing tenant and you never know who might be looking for an extra flatmate.

Attending University events such as Speed Flatting and Guide to Flatting is a great networking opportunity!

To connect with other students searching for private accommodation, get in touch with us to see when the next Advisory event will be held.

Private Accommodation Noticeboard

The Accommodation Solutions advisory service offers advice and assistance to students looking for private accommodation in Auckland. This noticeboard provides information on some of the accommodation options currently on offer.  It also provides a platform for you to advertise for flatmates for your spare room or to place an ad showing that you are seeking an available room to rent in a flat or apartment.
