Karate Club

The Auckland University Goju-Ryu Karate (AUGRK) Club began in 2003; it's current instructors are Ewan Tempero and Tom Davies. Ewan had run Beginners' Karate classes in 2002 with a view to starting a club, and meeting Tom was the catalyst to actually make it happen.

Tom already had a lot of experience in martial arts, having attained Shodan rank (1st degree black belt) in Zen Do Kai Karate Kickboxing, Shin Do Kempo Karate and gained his Nidan rank (2nd degree) belt in Yoshukai Karate in 1999. He then switched to Goju-Ryu Karate and is now a Sandan (3rd degree).

Ewan began studying Goju-Ryu Karate in 1989 in the United States, before returning to New Zealand, where he continued training and by 2003 was a Nidan in that style. He has recently graded to Yondan (4th degree black belt).

AUGRK is affiliated to the International Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate Federation (IOGKF), an international body dedicated to preserving the art of the Goju-Ryu style of Karate, as well as the New Zealand IOGKF affiliate, the IOGKFNZ. This gives club members access to expert instructions both nationally and internationally. These bodies also provide the certification of the instructors of all affiliates, including AUGRK.

AUGRK is also affiliated to AUSA, and, as a student club, works to provide good support for its student members. In particular, its fees for students are among the lowest for martial arts training.
