Metrogaine

The University's annual orienteering-style fun run event.

2019 event and photo album

We had a record 50 teams participate with over 200 students and staff involved. This year saw the finish line and chill out zone shift to the Grafton Campus for the first time.

Dress up was encouraged, with teams travelling on foot all over Auckland city visiting prominent landmarks such as the Sky Tower, the Viaduct and Mt Eden. A chill-out zone including music, free hot food and ice-cream as well as some awesome prizes greeted participants at the completion of the event.

Thank you to all of the participants. We hope to see you next year!

What is Metrogaine?

Metrogaine (noun): A form of rogaining held in an urban area.

Rogaining: A sport of cross-country navigation, involving both route planning and navigation between checkpoints using a variety of map types.

Metrogaine is an annual University of Auckland event designed to link the four inner-city campuses and the highlights of Auckland city through urban navigation.

The event is for all fitness levels- you can run, jog or walk in your teams of four people in either the one hour or two hour catergory.

You will be presented with a map of the area a few minutes before the event starts, which shows checkpoints where varying numbers of points can be collected within the mapped area. The aim of the game is to collect the most points and still make it to the finish line within the designated time. It's up to you to strategise!

It's a great way to do some team building, explore Auckland and get your daily steps up. Dress ups are encouraged, plus there are prizes for our category winners, spot prizes and free food and drinks at the finish line chill-out zone!
